As I entered the choir room at church yesterday, I was blessed with a smile and a big hug from a visiting member who now lives in South Carolina. He is 25, married, and has two adorable children.

The first time I met him he was in high school when we went on a church mission trip for a week in July to Stephenville, Tx. Our purpose for going was to help those who could not help themselves. We repaired roofs, ceilings, floors, and built wheelchair ramps for homeowners who were on fixed incomes and just didn’t have any money to take care of the problems themselves. The youth worked tirelessly that week, but had a lot of fun. As the days turned into weeks, that trip slowly faded out of their memory, but unbeknownst to them, God planted a seed. I was there to witness as the youth followed God’s call to literally be His hands and feet.

Those seeds would soon take root.

This young man decided on a career path that sometimes requires that he travel to dangerous locations for extended periods of time throughout the year.

In September 1947, the United States Air Force was formed, Colin and sonthe last of all five branches of the military.

From a teenage boy wearing a church mission trip t-shirt showing his faith in God, to a man wearing a United States Air Force uniform showing his faith in God and his loyalty to his country.

He, like hundreds of thousands of honorable men and women, made the choice to defend this great nation, to help those in need on US and foreign soil. To be His hands and feet…

He recently returned home from Afghanistan, he was there for seven months. Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, for seven months

(302,400 minutes) he lived through temperatures ranging from 15 degrees to 120+ degrees, was surrounded by gunfire, IED’s, mortar attacks, hate, fear, pain, and worse.

A week ago today, we honored those who have given their lives, their all for our freedom. Yesterday I was blessed to see one of our hero’s return home. I thanked SSgt. McGarity for the sacrifices he has made and for his service to our country, he said he was just doing his job.

I disagree…

God bless and keep all the men and women in uniform, who are just doing their jobs…
